I've always loved magazines. So it was destined that my first job would be at Scholastic, designing magazines about current events, art, literature, and reading. At first I was also able to do illustrations. But I soon discovered the creative benefits of assigning illustrations to a diverse community of illustrators--something that is still the best part of my job today.

Because of my art director jobs, I've gotten quite an education in many subjects, having read thousands of articles about art and art history, social studies, computers, parenting, decorating, cooking, and accounting. I never liked science and had taken as little science in school as possible. But the Universe made me pay for it by having me art direct a science magazine for four years. I still don't believe in quarks and that they come in flavors.
